I did look at Google Maps last week and I saw a trip that looked like a straight shot: over- east and up-north, Interstate to Interstate. Pie. I did print out the directions from Shohola to Goddard from Google Maps and didn't care why there would be 4 pages and 23 steps of directions for such a simple trip. Typically, to make sure I've got the visual embedded in my compass cells, I obsess over getting familiar with the road map before a trip, even the trips I've taken before- although I've now got the 3 mile trip to Harry's convenience store down solid.

12:10, I pull off Interstate 87 at the Platteskill rest area, gas up, pee down and get some free NY + Vermont maps. I'm thinking, I'll match the maps to the Google directions and verify the route. Big mistake. I sat for 20 minutes trying to read the oversaturated NY state map which cut off too closely to connect with the understated Vermont map which cut off too closely to match up to the NY map. Google directions were the only legible option, so off I went.
This is what it looked liked going 70 in the slow lane in a 65 mph speed zone on the NYS Thruway.
I skirted Lake George, and drove over the southern tip of Lake Champlain. As I passed through Whitehall NY, I was disappointed to see I'd miss the OxRoast advertised on the Lutheran church event board.

The lefts and rights have just begun as I drive into Vermont. At this point, the Adirondack geography looks similar to the Shawangunks. I start seeing all the signs for maple syrup and ski resorts. After another 4 Google steps = 50 miles, I'm in the heart of Killington and winding mountain roads that follow the White River (like 97 follows the Delaware) through the Green Mountains and my cell service has not advanced beyond 2 bars since.
At 5:30 I finally arrive at Goddard. 6 hours 45 min.
